Thanks a lot for your suggestion! I do not know why it took me so long
to try.

Since currently http://www.nvidia.com/object/unix.html lists 340.65 as
the "Latest Long Lived Branch version", I went with it.

340.65 solved the problem. (While I had 95% panics with 340.46
terminating the X server, I tried five times with 340.65 without an issue.)

Are you interested in results with 340.58, too, or is it irrelevant,
since the port will go to 340.65 next?
