cairo 1.12 works here (FreeBSD 11-CURRENT, Radeon HD 5870, xserver 1.12,
xf86-video-ati 7.2.0).

I think it even fixes a display corruption problem in Thunderbird, but
that requires further testing to confirm.

I'll update the wiki with these informations.
