xf86-video-ati with patch-src-radeon_driver.c freeze the system

I have two amd64 workstations running -current, one with an HD4850 and
one with an HD2600XT. With or without that patch, both machines work
fine with those GPUs. If I swap those cards for either an x850 or an
x1900, though, and they lockup immediately upon starting X if
xf86-video-ati is built with that patch:

If I rebuild the driver without that patch, both machines work fine with
either the x850 or the x1900.
