     This sort of confusion is exactly what I had hoped to avoid by including
in my original posting the following lines from kernel initialization and the
xorg.0.log file.

     Okay, that's good.  I am completely clueless as to what the differences
might be between an R350 and an R420/M18, nor do I have any idea of the
significance of "JN" in the above identification messages.  If the R350 code
in the r300 driver will work right, that's good enough for now, even if it
might not take full advantage of the differences between the different chip
models.
     Thanks again to all who have replied.  I'll give it a go.
