xorg 7.2->7.3 update and i810/intel driver

Hi folks,

I recently updated my xorg from 7.2 to 7.3 on a PC with an onboard
mobile 945GM card with a Samsung Syncmaster 213T at 1600x1200, and have
a lot of trouble now:

I was using the old i810 driver, which continued to work right after
the update. However, this was only for the first start of X. Starting
it again resulted in "no screens found". I found thos behaviour quite
strange, but using google I was able to find several other people
reporting the same problem. The suggested solution was to update from
the old i810 driver to the new intel driver.
After this update, X was working again, but only at 1024x768. Again, I
found several people reporting this problem, and a whole bunch of
suggested solutions (commenting out Refresh and Sync to get DDC values
and so on), but nothing seems to work here. I'm stuck with 1024x768,
which is really hardly usable for me.
I don't care much if I have to use the i810 or the intel driver
(although it's probably nicer to have the new driver), but I definitely
want back 1600x1200. Does anyone here have an idea how to achieve this?
I do not attach logfiles, cfg-files, output of xrandr and so on here,
because meanwhile I have quite a lot of them here, and I don't know
which one I should publish (and you definitely do not want them all in
here :-). Please let be know what you need to know.
