Keys (MOD4, Alt Gr, ...) stopped working after xkeyboard-config upgrade

As I am not the only one using this system, I usually start X via GDM.
I just tried ``startx'' and my keys work again; I also noticed that the
fonts in my CTWM menu look strange when logging in via GDM.

Is this a GNOME-related problem?
