Thanks. Got me thinking though, and I found an intriguing file called /var/log/messages. Last time I tried and failed loading dri (forcing PCI mode, which is how it worked last year), this message log settled into the following pattern (repeating ~17.5 times/second):

I hope someone here finds a clue. More info on request. Meantime, I'm going to stare at radeon_do_cp_idle a while.
