 As this doesn't seem to be the problem with FreeBSD ports (at least if I 
 understand correctly), you might consider submitting this to XOrg/XFree 
 bugzillas:
 https://bugs.freedesktop.org/
 http://bugs.xfree86.org/
 If they decide on either a fix or documentation enhancement (such as showing a 
 more comprehensive error), we can include it as a patch until next upgrade if 
 necessary.
