I have (had) a similar issue. It has nothing to do with your card, but 
with the default settings in Xterm-color in app-defaults.

Put this in your .Xresources file, assuming that's what you load up at 
startup time.

XTerm*VT100*color4: darkblue

The default setting is DodgerBlue, which was too light for me as well.
Of course, you don't have to use darkblue, that's just the most 
pleasing color for my taste.
