Any additional thoughts on this?  I rebooted with my UPS disconnected, and I
still get constant messages about device vanished.  Then I rebooted with *no*
external USB devices connected, and I *still* get these messages immediately
and constantly.  I never saw this with 11.3, and I may have to revert to it. 
I'm happy to run experiments to test any theories.
