This PR genuinely is about clang breaking other software (GCC on
powerpc in this case), which should be fixed.

Apologies for not focusing on separating the other issue of an ABI
change on powerpc earlier on; are you fine if we track the clang
breakage here and the ABI question over at
https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=239813 ?
