As I understood your objections, you were worried about the negative performance impact of loosing 'u', and the extra verbosity of loosing 'c'.
The first patch attempts to clean up ar flags, so makefiles respect the global ARFLAGS if one is defined, without changing the default ARFLAGS in share/mk/sys.mk. The second patch changes the default from 'rl' to 'cru'.
If this does not address your concerns, could you elaborate a bit more?
