semaphores and multithreading

hi

I am having a multi-threaded application. the child thread has to wait on a 
semaphore but when it does so the parent thread stops responding and taking 
inputs from the keyboard.
I tried changing the scheduling policy and priority of the child thread but 
in vain.
child thread is created with default attributes.
Can anybody figure out some solution for this?
