Whoa, dude that's like an episode from The Twilight Zone. Open mail, suddenly screen becomes all wavy, weird stuff happens ... heh.
It is true that ANSI/Unicode art requires a proper monospaced fixed-width font.
The best font I can recommend is the Fixedsys Excelsior 3.0: http://www.fixedsysexcelsior.com/
FSE is just like the legendary Fixedsys from MS Windows, but it has _complete_ unicode character set. Normal Fixedsys cannot show most pseudo-graphics characters, but Excelsior 3.0 does awesome job at that :)
FSE works also very well for general shell stuff.
This just my preference tho :)
I don't know many other similar fonts, there are so many in FreeBSD Ports and haven't had time to test all of them :P
