On my system FreeBSD 10.3-RELEASE (amd64) and pkg 1.8.7, command
pkg upgrade -f core dump:

pkg upgrade -f
Updating FreeBSD repository catalogue...
FreeBSD repository is up-to-date.
Updating Synth repository catalogue...
Synth repository is up-to-date.
All repositories are up-to-date.
Checking for upgrades (1422 candidates): 100%
Processing candidates (1422 candidates): 100%
Child process pid=63219 terminated abnormally: Segmentation fault

It worked with version 1.8.5 on FreeBSD 10.2-RELEASE.
