This is actually perfectly normal nowadays. For reasons impenetrable
to us poor mortals, the developers of Xorg have decreed that the
default shall be that when testing X displays a blank, black screen
impossible to distinguish from certain classes of things /going
horribly wrong/(tm).
If you want the old grey patterned screen, try:
# X -config /root/xorg.conf -retro
