Please don't top-post.

'shutdown -h now' will halt the system, ie put it into a state whereby
pressing the power button will turn off the system.

'shutdown -p now' will halt the system and then power down the system
down.

If 'shutdown -p now' isn't working for you, what is the output of
'sysctl hw.acpi'?
