Problem with Sempron-2800 + FreeBSD 5.4-BETA/PRE

So after my previous problem with 5.3 not being able to do a buildworld,
I decided that maybe an upgrade was in order.
I downloaded the 5.4 ISO and installed from it.
I tried to do a buildworld, same problem as the 5.3 install.

/usr/obj/usr/src/i386/usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lc
*** Error code 1

Stop in /usr/src/lib/libmagic.

I've had this problem on this same box with every install I've done.
Whats wrong?
