On my IBM T42, I set hw.acpi.lid_switch_state to S3, so opening the lid 
is enough.  If I suspend with acpiconf or the switch, pressing fn-F4 
(It's got a cresent moon on it, I think IBM does the same keys on other 
models) or pressing the holding the power switch for a couple seconds 
does the trick.
