building good custom kernel

hi ,
i tried building the freebsd 5.3 kernel and it works
fine, but can u people give me some tips regarding 
optimizing kernel during build, even saving a single
cpu cycle would mean a lot. i would like to have a 
kernel that is really optimized. And what do you
people do to fine tune the kernel?
