mt stuck in cbwait

Hi,
During the nightly backup the tape drive gave some errors and now the
mt process seems to be stuck in cbwait mode. ps -axl says:
0 44326 1 0 -6 0 916 348 cbwait D ?? 0:00.00 mt
-f /dev/nsa0 rewind
I tried several different KILL's but got nowhere. I manually ejected
the tape and put another back in again, but that didn't wake it up
either. Is there anything else I can try before rebooting the server
and killing 198 days of uptime?
