Zounds! I just booted the same machine/OS and saw this:
SMP: AP CPU #1 Launched!
which made me think I must have booted off the backup 4.8-release
disk... but No, it's the 4.8-stable that I've been complaining about.
In my xterm I still have the next-to-last reboot:
FreeBSD/i386 bootstrap loader, Revision 0.8

Loading /boot/defaults/loader.conf
|/kernel text=0x24fd42 data=0x31f20+0x2ff94 syms=[0x4+0x35cc0+0x4+0x3d015]
\
Hit [Enter] to boot immediately, or any other key for command prompt.
Booting [kernel]...

SMP: AP CPU #1 Launched!
The only difference between the two boots is the disgust I felt
when I turned it off for the weekend between the two reboots.
