the next question is, of course: why would anyone want to shift discussion over security in general away from the public, and into his own, secretive meetings ?

I leave the answer for everyone to decide for themselves.
What I saw on the defcon slide, is layman-like code quality. Even I (!) could do a lot better.
This is __ridiculous__.

The Freebsd foundation has money (I heard 1million from the Whatsapp founder ?).

What I think is happening here by this idiotic, demoralising and unconstructive and conversation-destroying approach of Mr des Smoerebread is the following: we (the users or others) are being patronised by some members (..) as they believe it is usus to have the people watched over - if they all do what is "for the greater good", if they all do what the "governors" think is meant for us to do. Mr Des seems a typical figure in representing/supporting secret services so that "his world" is fine. Meaning, the blockage of discussion and of arguments has only ONE reason: see das Dritte Reich - the Third Reick. Etc. etc.

I will not continue using freebsd when I have the impression that this is what is going on. Certainly not.
