We boot a dozen FreeBSD systems diskless to 12.0. I am no longer involved
but I asked collegue Alex Aminoff who has done our recent upgrades. Here
is his report:

We have not had any trouble booting 12.0 diskless. What we did is take
our 11.3 installation and upgraded it using freebsd-update . We had to
do it carefully using the -b <basedir> flag.

In out boot directory, we have:

   -r-xr-xr-x 3 root wheel 372736 Dec 23 12:02 boot/loader_lua
   -r-xr-xr-x 2 root wheel 488960 Dec 23 12:02 boot/loader_lua.efi
   -r--r--r-- 1 root wheel 2402 Dec 23 12:02 boot/lua/loader.lua

Hope this is of some help. We do like booting diskless and want to thank
whoever at FreeBSD keeps it an option for us.
