Yes, I was. After almost a quarter century using FreeBSD, it's a bit
embarrassing to admit to my confusion. It's something I did back just after
geli came into existence and have not really paid attention to since a bit
before I retired almost a decade ago. It turns out to have been a trivial
issue caused by confusion from not adequately understanding the keying
information in the geli man page.
