That should be possible, given the starting point is already
a version supported by freebsd-update (i. e. X.Y-RELEASE-pZ").
You cannot use freebsd-update with a -STABLE or -CURRENT version
of your installation. See "man 8 freebsd-update" especially for
the -r <release> option as well as chapter 23 of The FreeBSD Handbook,
especially section 23.2.3. (Performing Major and Minor Version

While it is usually no big deal to upgrade to a new major version,
many users say that they prefer to install from scratch, using
the latest release of the new major version, then applying the
patches using freebsd-update. Consider this an option. :-)
