This might be related to filesystem inconsistencies.
In addition to what Ralf already suggested, boot the
system in single-user mode and perform a forced fsck
of all related filesystems. Verify _first_ that all
filesystems are clean and consistent in order to get
valid results from all further experiments.

Only you can tell. :-)

Run Firefox from within a terminal so you can see
possible error messages as they occur.
In worst case, you can use the "truss" program to
find out _where_ exactly Firefox is crashing.
