No, I have to apologize: I should have mentioned that I already defined

         Identifier "system-keyboard"
         MatchIsKeyboard "on"
         Option "XkbLayout" "de"

in /usr/local/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/keyboard.conf. KB layout in general 
works as expected - except from umlauts.
