I migrated from 5.7 to 8.x. The only trouble I got is that in 8.x, you
cannot name a table as "groups", so any table I had that had such a name I
renamed to mygroups. I had to change all code referring to such a table as
well.
So go ahead and move to mysql-8.x with that in mind.
