Boot halts at trying to mount root

I don't have the option to enter the partition information. The system
just stops and the keyboard does nothing. If the system is going into
multi-user mode instead of single-user mode I do see it trying to
initialize the network interface with
re0 link state down
re0 link state up
and I can see on the router the network interface is connected and its
aliases.
