syslog unresponsive for *.err;kern.warning;auth.notice;mail.crit

hi,

on 2 boxes now i've seen problems with su logins that seem to be related 
to syslog

and in fact syslog won;t restart with the std

*.err;kern.warning;auth.notice;mail.crit /dev/console

when this is changed to a file all is ok.

slightly worrying when you can;t su to root however...

anyone else seen this?
