This same topic caused me no end of grief .

The more important question is how do you determine for any given 
package which one is correct ?

While you may determine 7.2 is the correct php , other port installs 
attempt to compile 'their' recommended version of php which is less than 7.2

same with gcc . if you install the current/production version , other 
ports want a lesser version .

I attempted to research where to find versions but I couldn't find a 
reliable resource .
