Can I use FreeBSD as a desktop system?

Yes, absolutely - as long as you use hardware that's supported. That
can sometimes be a bit tricky, especially for wireless networking -
but check your hardware.
I've got two laptops and several desktops running FreeBSD. My
platforms are mostly for email/office/sysadmin stuff, not
gaming/entertainment, but I know there are people out there who do
that as well.
