Lost sound on Youtube videos

Since a recent pkg upgrade, affecting about 120 packages, I've lost
sound output on Youtube. It affects all my browsers - Firefox, Chromium
& Konqueror.

The sound is there, it's just not being played by browsers. If I access
the same URL with VLC the sound works.

It's not just Yoitube, e.g. CNN and Sky news are now silent but I get
sound in videos from bbc.co.uk/news/
