Well, memory test (memtest86) runs as stand-alone process sort of. This
means, yes, it does test huge variety of bit patters, thus can rule out
regular things like dead bits, leads connected to each other (address or
data), or broken leads (bad contact), cross-talk between lines externally
on the box or internally inside chips etc. But unfortunately this doesn't
cover all possibilities of memory errors, some of them can be really
weird, and occur only when machine is under really heavy load. This last
can be triggered in marginal situations when memory is "almost failing",
i.e. signals are close to the limits yet still withing specs. Heavy load
can increase ripple on some memory bus leads (say, power leads), which may
trigger the above signals going out of specs (even if the ripple is still
is withing specs). And this real situation has no chance to be detected
running memtest86. Memtest86 runs at virtually zero load, so many factors
(hardware related) are favorable for passing memtest86 successfully.

I guess, what I'm trying to say: even if memtest86 is successful through
4+ loops, one can not fully rule out memory.

On the other hand, I realize not that this is long thread that here is
truncated to very short item....
