Does wine64 actually work?

I removed wine and installed wine-staging (v2.17), and then I tried 
running notepad.exe from Win 7 under wine64. I get:

err:winedevice:ServiceMain Failed to load L"win32k.sys"

No notepad window. Does anyone have any tips for resolving this problem?
