Can't grow disk on Google Cloud

Doing

# growfs /

Did the trick:

Filesystem         Size    Used   Avail Capacity  Mounted on
/dev/gpt/rootfs     42G    1.8G     37G     5%    /
devfs              1.0K    1.0K      0B   100%    /dev

Is there a reason why growfs /dev/da0p3  didn't work?
