You can also have pkg use the latest branch instead of the quarterly
branch by replacing 'quarterly' with 'latest' in /etc/pkg/FreeBSD.conf.

$ cat /etc/pkg/FreeBSD.conf
# $FreeBSD: releng/11.0/etc/pkg/FreeBSD.conf 303975 2016-08-11 23:39:23Z
gjb $
#
# To disable this repository, instead of modifying or removing this file,
# create a /usr/local/etc/pkg/repos/FreeBSD.conf file:
#
#   mkdir -p /usr/local/etc/pkg/repos
#   echo "FreeBSD: { enabled: no }" > /usr/local/etc/pkg/repos/FreeBSD.conf
#

#FreeBSD: {
#  url: "pkg+http://pkg.FreeBSD.org/${ABI}/quarterly",
#  mirror_type: "srv",
#  signature_type: "fingerprints",
#  fingerprints: "/usr/share/keys/pkg",
#  enabled: yes
#}

FreeBSD: {
  url: "pkg+http://pkg.FreeBSD.org/${ABI}/latest",
  mirror_type: "srv",
  signature_type: "fingerprints",
  fingerprints: "/usr/share/keys/pkg",
  enabled: yes
}
