Ah, that newish libXxf86dga, I still have the old version I guess...

Try this patch: https://people.freebsd.org/~danfe/q2lnx-xf86dga.diff

Also: by default it would start in software mode (that tiny X11 window),
run it as "quake2 +set vid_ref glx" to go fullscreen GLX mode.  Setting
will be preserved, so next time you don't have to force vid_ref again.
Alternatively, you can use in-game menu.
