Can't install freebsd inside virtualbox, glacially slow

Just for the record: I'm running a virtual box 4.3.26 on linux 64 bit,
and have a FreeBSD machine with 512 MB of ram that is running fine.
I think that we should compare some diagnostic data for a better
understanding of where the problem lies.
