Upgrading a FreeBSD 7.1 server

You are so right, I would like to avoid if possible.

Mostly because of vulnerabilities like Poodle and having an issue with 
the ports system getting some of the latest packages. I was having an 
issue with the ports system on another machine with a later version and 
upgraded it fine. Should I be able to work out the conversion of the 
ports system in 7.1 to pkg?
