Before you mess with any configurations, run <freebsd-version -ku>.

The security updates come in two parts - one (the -k) relates to kernel 
updates; the other (the -u) relates to userland updates.

For example, on my up-to-date 10.1-RELEASE amd64, I get:

10.1-RELEASE
10.1-RELEASE-p3

<uname -a> shows the kernel part.
