Updating a program

I do not use Portsnap either. I'm using Git to update the
ports tree and I have a good reason to do so. I wrote some
tweaks and I removed the so-called "reformed orthography"
from the German translations. After fetching the updates I
merge these changes in before I update the ports.

Portsnap cannot do that.
