I had been using ssmtp to send mail via an internal open mail relay server, but now port 25 traffic is blocked to non-official systems by internal firewalls. The freebsd box isn't "official" which means it can't be given access, but it can't be official until the proof-of-concept works (classic catch-22). I don't know if port 465 (secure SMTP) is blocked.

Can you open an SSH tunnel from your FreeBSD box to your mail relay
server (or to some 'official' box that is allowed to use port 25)?
Assuming SSH port isn't blocked, that should work.
