from an rxvt shell:

[root at kabini1, /etc, 6:47:30pm] 597 % htop
Error: could not read procfs (compiled to look in /compat/linux/proc).
[root at kabini1, /etc, 7:25:54pm] 598 %

which explains it .... I am midstroke on (trying to) shift from
linux-f10 to linux-c6 ports/pkgs for linux compatibility, & I
deinstalled all of the linux-f10 stuff (which recommended removing the
above dir as well as the linuxprocfs) :-) .... problem solved, thx.

Now if I could just get some resolution on my linux-c6 problem :-/ ....
