Hello,
My 'uname -a' output is :
FreeBSD letterman.oplib.org 8.2-RELEASE-p9 FreeBSD 8.2-RELEASE-p9 #0: Mon Jun 11 22:27:05 UTC 2012     root at i386-builder.daemonology.net:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/GENERIC  i386

I am new to freeBSD and the web server of the library runs on freeBSD.I am trying to install PHP extensions as i just wrote a PHP script that i need to run on the library's website using
 portupgrade and each time i use the "make install clean" command ,i get the error:

Unknown modifier 't'

"/usr/ports/Mk/bsd.port.mk", line 1767: Malformed conditional (defined(USE_RC_SUBR) && ${USE_RC_SUBR:tu} != "YES")
Unknown modifier 't'

"/usr/ports/Mk/bsd.port.mk", line 6711: Unexpected end of file in for loop.

make: fatal errors encountered -- cannot continue

I found out that i might need to upgrade the freeBSD version as i am still using an unsupported version.
1. How do i get to solve this error because i cannot make use of the "make install clean" command?
2.What is the latest supported freeBSD version and how can it be installed?
3.Would the upgrade to the latest version of freeBSD make a big change to the server settings and files as i am new to this and do not want to alter any major changes as it host the library's website.
