FreeBSD installer can't detect SATA disk

Good day all.

I have an old machine and I want to make it into a FreeBSD workstation.
It's a triple core AMD  Phenom on an ECS board.
When the FreeBSD 10 (x86) installer reaches the disk partitioning part, it bails. Apparently it can't detect the SATA 2 hard drive.
I tried playing with BIOS, turning off APCI, and other options, no success

OpenBSD installer finds the drive without issues.

POST reports the drive as
SATA 2 ST3250620AS 3AAk 

Ultra DMA Mode-6 S.M.A.R.T Capable and Status OK.

Please let me know if anyone had a similar issue.
