Here's an optimized recipe for FreeBSD-10 that differs slightly from the

pkg install -y gnome2
pkg install -y gdm
X -configure
cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf{,.bak} # Pedantic
mv -f /root/ /etc/X11/xorg.conf
sysrc gnome_enable=YES
sysrc gdm_enable=YES
printf "proc\t\t/proc\tprocfs\trw\t0\t0\n" >> /etc/fstab

Log in via GDM
Start using Gnome

Mind you, that's basically an optimization of what's in the handbook...
