What about freetype, libXfont and other stuff related to
fonts? Maybe you need to call "ttmkfdir -o fonts.dir" for
each of the directories listed in xorg.conf?

Also see 6.5.3 for a longer session of XML fun. ;-)

Your xorg.conf file probably isn't the problem (if everything
font-related is still present and actually installed).
