>From my experience, such a line is also required if they are detected
by the OS but otherwise unconfigured with an IP address. I've had to
do this machines that have multiple NICs, where one or more is
un-numbered but used for monitoring, such as when running ntop and
monitoring a switch via the span/mirror port connected to the
un-numbered NIC.
